A y2k vision: The Film EP

This alternative feminine-fronted pop group has the moment all over again demonstrated that there are several items in lifetime superior than a synthesizer, head-banging with pink hair and spilling your heartbroken guts out into a tune. Self-labeled badasses, Awful Cherry is a group of four 20-something-year-aged women of all ages brought with each other with the sole intention of making new music on the scene. With a audio similar to Dua Lipa and Sky Ferreira, the group’s audio is a little something out of a teenage dream romance flick. The team was shaped by Charli XCX in 2018 and was recently featured in the Netflix docu-sequence “I’m with the Band: Awful Cherry” in 2019, which adopted the band from their get started as strangers in a home to their increase taking part in bought-out venues. The group unveiled their initial EP on November 22, 2018.

The group is made up of direct singer Gabi Bechtel, a previous product with astonishingly no audio knowledge prior to they formed guitarist Chloe Chaidez, direct singer of the rock band Kitten drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson, who earlier played drums on tour with Charli XCX and bassist Ga Somary, a single of Charli’s longtime buddies who commenced playing bass only a year just before becoming a member of the band.

The group’s most recent release, The Movie, is an EP dedicated to love, youth and the essence of the early 2000s. The y2k nostalgia is evident throughout the group’s new music, every single take note sending photos of denim mini skirts, eye rolls and extended talks about the boys at faculty on telephones with curly cords.

The opener on the EP, “Six Six Six,” is a more difficult rock track in comparison to the relaxation of the pop-centered EP (consider Rocky Horror Photograph meets a teen romance movie), which speaks to the group’s fluid energy. “What’s The Deal” is an ethereal tune, not as opposed to some of Caroline Polachek’s new music, these kinds of as “Door.”

“All in My Head” is a chill, guitar-major ballad with the spirit of the Cocteau Twins. The ‘80s indie-pop-encouraged tune “Her Body” feels like a track individuals would participate in at the conclusion of the night time at a nightclub. It is a break up revenge tune to keep in mind. With the spirit of the Cocteau Twins, lead singer Bechtel sings, “If I come across her human body/ Lyin’ up coming to yours/ Will not be me which is hurtin’/ ‘Cause you’re headfirst in the filth.”

The final track, “Lucky,” is a major synth piece that feels like it could be employed in a montage scene of an ’80s rom-com. With catchy chord progressions and layered harmonies, this music may possibly be the end result of Gary Numan selecting to become an different pop lady band.

Unpleasant Cherry usually takes familiar indie tunes to yet another magenta-hued degree in The Movie with their new-age synth tones, features of ’90s rock and influence from the pop of the early 2000s.
